Will the former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, contest the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat from Punjab? This is a very interesting question that can be answered in the coming days. The Congress party has urged Dr. Manmohan Singh to contest from Amritsar.
On Sunday evening, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, Congress President of Punjab Sunil Jakhar and in-charge Asha Kumari met the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for about half an hour and during this time, he urged that this time Dr. Manmohan Singh must contest from Amritsar.
After this meeting, Punjab Congress President Sunil Jakhar told, “We have urged the former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to contest from Amritsar seat of Punjab. It would be a matter of pride for Punjab and Punjab Congress. Dr. Manmohan Singh is not only a Fakr-e-Hind but not just a Fakr-e-Punjab, but Fakr-e-Jahan. Obama had said if anyone has any opinion then take the opinion from Dr. Manmohan Singh. But is Dr. Manmohan Singh ready to contest the elections? In response to this question, Jakhar said, ‘We have just spoken to him but now he has to decide’.
Amritsar is considered as the most important Lok Sabha seat in Punjab, out of total 13 seats. From 2004 to 2014, Navjot Singh Sidhu is a Lok Sabha MP from BJP. After cutting Sidhu’s ticket in mischief, BJP contested senior leader Arun Jaitley from here but senior Congress leader Capt Amarinder Singh defeated Arun Jaitley by nearly one lakh votes.
At the end of 2016, Capt Amarinder Singh resigned from the post of MP, accusing him of injustice to Punjab on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal case. This was followed by a by-election in February 2017 in Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, in which Congress’s Gurjeet Singh Aujla won. The Amritsar Lok Sabha seat is currently held by the Congress and if Dr. Manmohan Singh favors fighting this seat, then the current MP will have to shift or cut his ticket.
