Felix wins the title, surpassing Jadon Sancho and Kai Herbert’s
Portugal’s footballer João Felix has been selected for this year’s ‘Golden Boy’ Award. The name of Felix, who plays club football for Atletico Madrid, was announced on Wednesday. The award is given by the Italian newspaper Tutto sport to the best footballer under 21 in Europe. Felix, 20, won the title, beating English footballer Jadon Sancho and German midfield Kai Hebert’s.
A panel of 40 journalists selected Felix for the award through voting. During this time, he got 332 voting points, while Sancho was second with 175 points and Havard’s was third with 75 points.
Felix thanked everyone
Releasing a video message after winning the award, he said, ‘I am very proud to thank all of you in the Tutto sport for the Golden Boy Award 2019.’ This is the second time that a player from Atletico Madrid has won this trophy and I am thrilled with it. Thanks to Benfica, especially to my coach Bruno Lage who did so much for me. Thank you also to my family for always standing with me. ‘
Rs 936 crore transfer
Felix has moved to Atlético Madrid during this season, transferring from Benfica. The deal was for around $131 million (about Rs 936 crore). Last season, he scored 15 goals for Benfica. Atletico has scored three goals so far this season.
Messi and Pogba have also won the title
Last year, Dutch defender Mathews de-Ligt won the award. He was playing for Ajax at the time but later started playing for Juventus. Former winners who have won this award are Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe Sergio Aguero won this award before Felix from Atletico in 2007.
