  • India ranked 103rd and Qatar 62nd in world rankings

In Round 2 of the FIFA World Cup qualifier, the Indian football team held the Asian champions Qatar to a 0-0 draw in Doha on Tuesday night. With this draw, India secured the first point. They lost the previous match 1-2 against Oman. They rank the 2022 World Cup host team 62nd in the Qatar World Rankings. The Indian team is at number 103. India’s next match will be against Bangladesh on October 15 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

This draw is also important for India because it became the first country not to lose against Qatar this year. Not only that, but Qatar also scored against strong teams like Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, but the Indian team, without star player Sunil Chhetri, did not let them score.

Goalkeeper Gurpreet blocked 11 straight shots from the goalpost

Qatar made 27 attempts to score goals in the match, but Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and the defenders could forcefully stop him. Gurpreet proved to be the best player for India in this match. He prevented 11 straight shots from getting to the goalpost. This was officially the second match between India and Qatar. Earlier in September 2007, Qatar defeated the Indian team 6–0 in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

Sunil Chhetri said- this is my team and player

Regular skipper Sunil Chhetri, who did not play in this match, expressed happiness on the team’s performance by tweeting. He wrote, ‘Dear India, this is my team and players, I cannot tell how proud I am feeling right now. We did nothing well at the point table but we played well in the game. Big credit to the coaching staff and dressing room. ‘
