The CAC can announce the next coach of Team India later this week or early next week.
The Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Council has shortlisted 6 names.
- former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson,
- Ex Australian all-rounder Tom Moody,
- former Team India manager Lalchand Rajput and
- Ex Team India fielding coach Robin Singh.
Former West Indian opener Phil Simmons and current coach Ravi Shastri are also in this race.
Shastri is currently on a West Indies tour with Team India. They have given him an extension for this tour.
Cricket Advisory Council (CAC) will interview all 6 candidates. It will be on Friday. Ravi Shastri can give presentations and interviews via Skype. Apart from Kapil Dev, the CAC includes former India India opener Anshuman Gaekwad and former women’s cricket team captain Shantha Rangaswamy.
Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody was a contender to become the coach of the Indian team after John Wright in 2005, but they gave Chappell the responsibility. Moody then became the coach of the Sri Lankan team. Under his coaching, Sri Lanka reached the final of the 2007 World Cup. He coached Western Australia at the 2007 Big Bash. After this, he was also the coach of Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL. It was under his coaching that the Sunrisers team became champions in 2016. They recently removed him from the post of the coach by the Sunrisers.
Hesson was New Zealand coach for 6 years. In his coaching, the Kiwi team reached the final of the 2015 World Cup. It then lost in the final against Australia. Last year, he resigned as the coach. He then coached Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Phil Simmons played 26 Tests and 143 ODIs for the West Indies, retired in 2002. He became the coach of Zimbabwe in 2004. He was named Ireland coach after the 2007 World Cup. Simmons coached the team in 224 matches. Simons became the Windies coach in 2015. The team won the 2016 T20 World Cup under his coaching. After this, in 2017, he became the coach of the Afghanistan cricket team. Simmons is currently the coach of the Brampton Wolves in the Canada T20 League.
Lalchand is currently the coach of Zimbabwe, but the team has been banned by the ICC. He was the manager of the team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the CB Series on Australian soil in 2008. Former Mumbai opener batsman Lalchand has played two Tests and four ODIs for India. He started his coaching career with the Under-19s. In 2007, they made him the coach of the Indian under-19 team for the tour of England.
After they made Lalchand the manager of the senior team. Lalchand was the coach of the Mumbai Indians in the 2008 season of the Indian Premier League. In 2016, he became the coach of Afghanistan cricket team. It was under his coaching that Afghanistan achieved the status of being a full member of the ICC by defeating the West Indies. In 2018, he became the coach of Zimbabwe.
Robin who played one Test and 136 ODIs for India, was the former fielding coach of Team India. He was the coach of the Indian under-19 team. In 2004, they made him the coach of the Hong Kong cricket team. During his stay, the team qualified for the 2004 Asia Cup. In 2006, they made him the coach of India ‘A’.
He became the fielding coach of Team India in 2007-09. In 2008, they appointed him the coach of the Deccan Chargers in the first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He coached by Mumbai Indians in 2010 for 3 years. The team became runners-up in 2010 during their stay. Apart from this, he coached the last 8 other home teams.
57-year-old Shastri was Team India captain Kohli’s choice. Shastri got four big chances to prove himself as a coach – Test series in South Africa, England and Australia and then the World Cup, but he failed in 3 of these 4 missions. The team could not win the Test series in South Africa and England. The team could not make it to the finals of the World Cup which ended recently. One of his major achievements is to win the team for the first time in a Test series in Australia.
